Use iPhone with iOS 12 as An OV Chip Card. With iOS 12, developers can use existing iPhones as an OV chip card or hotel room key. Apple would open the NFC chip to developers.
That’s what insiders say to the Information. iPhones have had an NFC chip since the iPhone 6 in 2014.
Such a chip can connect at a short distance with, supposedly for a payment device. Primarily a specific use of the chip in iPhones for Apple’s payment service Apple Pay, which is not yet available in the Netherlands.
With the upcoming iOS 12, a limited number of developers would also gain access to the chip. In this way, both existing and new iPhones, we can use as a hotel key or OV chip card.
Just like a pass
Users would only have to keep their phones with a scanner in the future to check in. The screen should not be on, and no additional verification would be necessary.
Android devices have been supporting NFC applications for years for all developers who want it. Banks, hotels and public transport companies often already have Android apps that allow users to use their phone instead of a pass.
Apple traditionally keeps iOS a lot more closed than Android. iOS 12 is expected to view at the Apple Developers’ Conference WWDC, which will start on Monday, June 4.
