Tens of thousands of Beijing residents quarantined

After the outbreak of the coronavirus in a Beijing wholesale market, the number of infections rises to the highest level in months. Around 90,000 people were isolated.
In Beijing, the number of new infections with coronavirus continues to rise. The Health Commission said 40 new cases had been identified from Monday to Tuesday, 27 of them in Beijing. More than 100 infected people in Beijing were on Friday. That is more than in two months. According to the city administration, the cases of infection can be traced back to the Xinfadi wholesale market in northwest Beijing.
The authorities isolated the approximately 90,000 residents of the neighbourhoods around the Xinfadi wholesale market and another market. Wholesale market workers, anyone who has been there for the past two weeks or who has been in touch with someone who has visited the market, should be tested. Among other things, residents of the affected neighbourhoods were prohibited from leaving the city. A number of loosenings were also withdrawn.
China is considered the country of origin of the pandemic. In the central Chinese metropolis of Wuhan, the first cases of infection of people with the novel coronavirus were identified at the end of last year. Strict exit restrictions then imposed since late January have largely controlled the spread of the virus, officials said.
