Netflix Wants Fewer Smokers in its Films and Series after Research
Netflix wants to reduce the number of smokers in its and series. This action follows a recent study by the Truth Initiative, which has shown that popular programs are increasingly smoking.
The research showed that “much more” tobacco is shown on Netflix than on regular American television. In the other season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt would have smoked the most, 292 times. Stranger Things has the highest total smoke mentions in two seasons. In the seventeen episodes that appeared between 2016 and 2017, a cigarette was shown a total of 444 times.
Netflix says that the programs aimed at young people will only have smokers to be historically or factually accurate. For other programs, cigarettes will only be visible if they are essential to the creative vision of the maker or defined for a certain character.
