Greece expels migrants – Turkey sends 1,000 police officers
The Athens government recently sent migrants illegally back to their countries of origin. The Turkish police are strengthening their units on the Evros border river.
The Greek government has reported that it means to oust vagrants who have entered the nation wrongfully in the previous not many days. “We will likely take them back to their nations,” Immigration Minister Notis Mitarachi told the Athens news organization. First, the refugees are to be brought to the northern Greek city of Serres and then deported. All people who entered the country illegally after March 1 are affected – on that day Greece announced that it would no longer accept asylum applications.
At the same time, the Turkish government sends a thousand additional police officers to the border with Greece. These should “prevent” the Greek government from “pushing back” refugees trying to cross the Evros border river, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said during a visit to the border area. The police officers are fully equipped with special forces.
