Facebook outage: a front page full of random posts
Facebook is experiencing technical difficulties this morning. Users see tons of random posts from strangers appearing on their Facebook feed.
In most cases, these are messages from random users directed to pages of famous people, such as actors, musicians, and bands.
Thousands of people complain on the Downdetector site. They all tell the same story there: they suddenly see messages from people they don’t know appear on their front page. Complaints about the problem have been pouring in from 7 am this morning. Google Trends shows a 4900 percent growth in the search term ‘Facebook Feed’ as people flock to find out what’s happening. The term ‘Facebook hacked’ is also searched much more often than usual.
When asked, Facebook will inform you that it will come back to the situation at a later date. There is no information on whether malfunction or, for example, human error. Such a human error was the reason for an hours-long outage of Facebook, Meta, and WhatsApp last year.
